About Halal Tourism, Thailand Over Indonesia

TIMES OF ISLAM, TANJUNG ENIM - As a Muslim majority country, Indonesia targets 20 percent of the 10 million foreign tourists to enjoy halal tourism offered in Indonesia, which means that at least two million people are targeted to become a market for halal tourism in Indonesia, as reported by halhalal.com.

However, it turns out that the figure is still less than the figures achieved by other countries for halal tourism, such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Singapore targets four million tourists, Malaysia targets five million people, while Thailand occupies the highest position, namely six million people who enjoy halal tourism offered by their country.

"Thailand is the majority non-Muslim, but they can mobilize business for Muslim tourists," said Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, some time ago.

The government also targets a quarter of the total 20 million foreign tourists to enjoy halal tourism, which per capita expenditure is greater than the average foreign tourist. Halal tourist lovers spend up to 1,500 - 1,700 US dollars per capita per day while ordinary foreign tourists only spend around 1,200 US dollars per capita per day.

As of October 2015, the Ministry of Tourism noted the number of foreign tourist arrivals reached 8,017,589 people, up 3.38 percent from the same period last year. Until the end of this year, the projections of 10 million foreign tourists are targeted to be fulfilled.

The government is also targeting tourism foreign exchange from foreign tourists to reach Rp. 172 trillion with the number of visits pegged at least 12 million in 2016.
